August 4th 1914 Tuesday
Heard that more than 80 French and Russian spies had been caught and shot. Some were disguised as women, some as hospital-nurses, others as German officers. The police are very suspicious and sometimes lay hands on the most innocent of people.
Went for a walk with C, to the Tiergarten. I stole a flower from the rose gardens and presented it to her. We had such a nice walk—the lovely park and picturesque little river. There was one particular spot which charmed us both: a tree bent gracefully over a pond, as transparent as a mirror—its graceful leaves reflected on the smooth surface of the sweet, quiet waters. C is not crazy about the morning sun—she is so frightened of ruining her complexion, but she loves the moon and so do I of course.
We returned home at 2:0 p.m.
