August 13th 1914 Thursday.
Papers full of the cruelty of the Belgians and Franctireurs. They call this war “Der Franctireurkrieg”.
Totally wrong accounts, owing to the Paris press, are being spread in England.
I had been longing for some London newspapers. A surprise was in store for us all. Hardly had we sat down to tea, than who should enter the room but Kathleen. I don’t think I was ever so surprised in my life. When we had all recovered we started questioning her about England at once. She had been four days on her way from London to Berlin, and had experienced great difficulties—such as sleeping in luggage vans etc. She had come over with the wife of one of the officers in the guards here, who had helped to protect her from the customs officers.
