My dearest Bertie,
I’m writing this under the most miserable circumstances imaginable: evacuated from Vehmersalmi and all my interest and belongings.…
Transport of course disorganised in the first days of war: I had to row 25 kilometers in a rowing boat to get train. Russian planes overhead, refugees arriving from the east, frequent air raids in Helsinki while I was there.… I was 6 days in Helsinki and only had 2 meals … [b]ut meals are the very least of one worries.…
