[April 25th] At Tenedos. Today saw the commencement of, probably, the most gigantic operations of this, or any other war. At 2.30 am the squadrons & transports got under weigh & proceeded towards the Dardanelles. At 3 o/c am we breakfasted and cleaned in a fighting rig & at 4 o/c am “Action” sounded, and we passed the entrance to the Dardanelles 15 minutes later. Just as the day dawned the bombardment by all ships commenced & went on vigorously till 7 o/c am when the Allied troops commenced to land, the French on the Asiatic, and the British on the European side. The British Royal Marines landing to the N of Seddul Bahr. The bombardment meanwhile continuing more vigourously by all ships. A most appalling and magnificent spectacle. Airmen overhead, Submarines under the water, Battleships Cruisers, Destroyers & Minesweepers on the water, and the Allied Troops ashore all combining in their efforts to bring the present operations to a successful conclusion. Our position in the “Vengeance” being between Seddul Bahr & DeTottes Point, being the ship furthest up the Dardanelles; We were under fire practically from the start and received our first hit shortly after 11 o/c am, a shell piercing the foremost funnel from the port side and exploding on the starboard side smashing the sight bracket & telescope of the fore 12 pdr gun not however disabling it.
