Saturday July 3rd
I met the postman this morning as I was starting out for the Hospital. He gave me three things for myself – all from Roland & written on different dates. The letter from him was written on June 26th – but though from him was not by him. It was just a short note written at his dictation by his servant to say that he had cut his fingers a little & so for once had to get his servant to write for him. He thanked me for my letter from St. Monica’s. Poor dear! It must have been rather bad if he couldn’t write. I suppose he did it with those beastly wire entanglements or something of that sort. He goes on to say that they are being sent down south, presumably somewhere about the place where Garrod was & died – Festubert. In consequence all their leave has been cancelled, at least for the present. This is a very bitter blow. I had hoped to see him just once more before he went into the thick of the fighting – but now – Well, I suppose it was not to be. Perhaps these are given most to soldiers? who are most capable of
